Brief info

1. Dr. UDAYAN P.S. obtained his M.Sc., M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore with specialization in Medicinal Plant Taxonomy & Conservation.

 He started his career in 1990 in the Nilgiris, under the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and surveyed the vegetation of Sholas and grasslands for six years, till March 1996.

 Later he worked as a Botanist, in the Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions, (FRLHT) Bangalore from 1996 to 2002 and surveyed the Western Ghats forests with special focus to Medicinal Plants Conservation Areas coming under Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and some forests areas of Andhra Pradesh.

 From 2002 December to 3rd August 2010 he worked as a Senior Scientist in the Centre for Medicinal Plants Research (CMPR), Arya Vaidya Sala, Kotakkal, Malappuram, Kerala.

 Since 4th August 2010, he is working as an Assist. Professor and Head in the PG Department of Botany & Research Centre, Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur, Thrissur district, Kerala.

 He is devoted to the study of South Indian biodiversity right from the date of completion of post graduation and in 28 years of his research career he has published 4 books namely: “Illustrated Field Guide to 100 Red Listed Medicinal plants of Conservation Concern in Southern India” and “A reference checklist of Medicinal Plants of India” published by FRLHT, Bangalore, Medicinal Plants of Arya Vaidya Sala Herb Garden, published by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal and Flowering plants of Sholas and Grasslands of the Nilgiris, published by Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore and 11 chapters in Book.

 He is working on different aspects of South Indian flora viz. Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Medicinal Botany, Conservation, Ecology, Phytosociology, Reproductive Biology, Palynology, Phytochemistry, In vitro culture, Molecular Biology etc.

 He is a Ph.D. guide of 4 Universities (Kannur, Calicut, Bharathiar & Trans-Disciplinary University Bangalore and produced 5 Ph.Ds from Kannur University and 1 Ph.D. from Calicut University, presently 3 scholars perusing in Calicut University and 1 scholar in Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and an Visiting Professor of FRLHT’s Trans-Disciplinary University, Bangalore, Karnataka.

 Two Ph.D. scholars invented two new species and named Clematis udayanii and Litsea udayanii to honor Dr. Udayan for his achievements in the Field of Plant Taxonomy.

 He has more than 186 research papers to his credit including 2 poster award papers (2004 & 2010), 1 best oral paper for Scientists and Teachers from Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (2011), and best paper in 2015, 19 new species, 2 new variety and processing 9 new species of flowering plants from Western Ghats.

 In 2013, IAAT awarded to him as a Fellow of Indian Angiosperm Taxonomy (FIAT).

 More than 532 citations by peers for his published research papers in Google scholar.  He received Dr. Abdul Kalam Life Time Achievement National Award for Teaching, Research and Publications from International Institute for Social and Economic Reforms (R), Bangalore awarded at Entertainment Society of Goa, Maquinez Palace, Champal, Panaji, Goa on 06th December 2015.

 He is a visiting Scientist to Malabar Botanical Garden, Kozhikkode, Amala Ayurveda College, Thrissur and Amirtha Ayurveda College, Kollam and Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi.

 He is also handled a few projects funded by DST, KSCSTE, DBT, NMPB, TATA UGC minor project etc. Presently handling 2 SMPB major projects (in collaboration with Malabar Botanical Garden, Kozhikode and Kerala Forest Research institute, Peechi)
